Aberdeen Township, New Jersey
The township of Aberdeen is 7.8 square miles, of which 5.5 square miles is land and 2.2 square miles is water. The population of the township as of the year 2010 is 18,210 people, and 10,278 of that amount reside in Cliffwood Beach and Strathmore. Cliffwood Beach was a very popular resort until Hurricane Donna destroyed its boardwalk.
Aberdeen Township used to be called Matawan Township. On Nov. 8, 1977 the residents voted to change their name in order to distinguish it from Matawan Borough. They also believed that changing it to Aberdeen would bring attention to their township since it would place it first on the list of New Jersey’s 566 municipalities.
The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the first to settle in this area. The Lenape moved westward due to European settlement in the mid-eighteenth century. Although they have now settled mostly in Ontario and Oklahoma, their legacy survives in names such as the Luppatatong and Matawan Creeks and the Raritan Bay. Aberdeen is part of the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District, partnered with the township of Matawan. There are seven schools in the District ranging from preschool through high school.
A notable resident of Aberdeen Township was David L. Smith, who created the Melissa worm. It was a computer virus that wrecked havoc on the internet mail system, infecting e-mails in March of 1999. Although he did not originally design it for harm, David Smith was sentenced to serve 20 months in Federal prison in 2002. In 1964, the citizens of Aberdeen Township voted to change their form of government from Township Committee to the Council-Manager form of government, where the policy-making power is concentrated in the council. The Mayor is a member of this council. Aberdeen Township is one of over 40 municipalities in New Jersey with this form of government.
